எதிர் நீச்சல்- a mismatched Timepass

2nd May 2013, terrible summer night in Chennai; but a potpourri of movies had been decorated in Chennai's biggest screens- Devi Cineplex. a Landmark on Mount road next only to Santhi theaters in age- of those still doing business.

The movie line up was titillating from Nagarjuna's Greek Veerdudu to New sensation Hero Vijay Sethupathi's flick to Siddharth's Kollywood foray NH4- (a new attempt in south.)

So we friends decided to take a plunge on a less risky option of a comedy flick in form of a Ethir Neechal- a Siva Karthikeyan's another so called comic caper. As all other movies were watched by my friends.

So after i decide on a movie my brain works backwards to see what the plot would be ON?, without attempting to read a TOI/ The Hindu's/ or any channel's movie reviews or ratings,  and hence image of Veteran Actor Nagesh's role in KB's block buster Ethir Neechal stuck.

As i was imaging possible shades of Shiva in Nagesh's epic role, a Father & son team on a two wheeler stop in front of the theater complex: at that instant a teenish aged son quizzes his father what does Ethir Neechal mean? and his father with all knowledge explains the word...................................Now i rush into the theater with an expectation as i am watching Shiva Karthikeyan's second movie after Manam Kothi Paravai.

So now i realise its nothing to do with KB & Nagesh's Oldie.

Grey areas-

The storyline is unique and based on a real life incident woven into a character; so that the protagonist stumbles into the real life scenarios in each stage of his life. This movie can also be mentioned for its strong message towards one's character and strength built around to achieve in life.

With a good storyline the movie begins; but the knitting of plot is all too contrived, the way in which the heroine appears into the scenario and the ways in which the Hero gets hooked to heroine and the ensuing small hide and seek scenes makes the movie look like a typical prime time Mega serial on a Tamil Channel.

The comedy sidekick played by Satish has all the shades of Santhanam- which means nothing unique- from comic timing to expressions Satish has not done justice to his talent. Yes with a comedian like Santhanam around in industry people have natural tendency to compare but in this case Satish was typecasted into a role chiseled on Santhanam's lines and timings. So nothing new on comedy front except for a cameos of roles from Manobala/ Aarthi/ Madan Bob etc....................a loosely knit roles which fade from memory soon after the scene.

Every scene looks like an episode ending to beginning.

Now to Hero's acting- Siva has done a commendable job- good emotions/ neat romance moves and his own style. He lends weight to this drama like movie.

Priya Anand is good looking in good costumes hence adds charm to Siva's performance.

Music has found its roots among the audience with good beats- Anirudh's BGM has also kept the audience rooted to their seats in the climax which minus music would have sunk the movie.

Dhanush garnered max whistles and claps for his Kuthu moves. Did a good song.

Director Durai Senthilkumar has got a keen eye for subtle moves in a character.

The climax minus music in the movie is a poorly conceived idea with footage shots of Nehru stadium/ rival marathon runner's poor face expressions and Siva not breaking into a heavy sweat in a 20Km marathon looks all like a good makeup job. Much is desired from the final scenes with respect to effort going into a Marathon from main actors expressions and body language.

The athletes guise is missing in final lap, no wonder this shot can also be used as how not to finish the final lap in Marathon. For a movie made on crores this looks all too silly and crass because climax demands more of effort being put in by the Hero to reach his goal & the team working on his makeup or whatever................

I would recommend this movie for BGM- Kutthu song/ Choreography/ Cinematography- few angles and shots were super/ & Siva's acting.

Sure watch it once- a good fun movie.
