Begum Jaan- Jaan se Maaro dekhne wale Ko

All hype and gripe has made the hall full is what i felt today 2nd day of its theatrical release.

Above is for Vidya Balan.

The supporting star cast was good, the canvas was very loosely knit and gaping holes here and there makes it a disappointment.

I wondered a great moola Katha woven around partition and the backdrop will make for riveting story but just fizzled out in second half.

Vidya balan known for some daring roles will add to her trophy chest this new medal of portraying a hard hitting character of running a brothel. Director seemed obsessed to give Vidya larger than life image which looks a tard over doing the screenplay.

Other giants like Naseerudin, Ashish and Rajit kapoor played a peripheral role which was just adding to the Vidya's overpowering presence and Chunkey Pandey is new avatar looked titillating. Similarly Ila Arun and her typical rusky booming voice actually added sparkle to movie and her role, it made me admire her for her scenes more. like dusting a epic book and opening its pages to find its charm.

There were many glimpses of goodness in the movie like the dialogues which are typical to hypocritical or demanding male customers to a Brothel, lesbian love blooming in the kotha, a hawk eyed guard, a difficult love blossoming between a male helper and a Kotha female, a patronising King all adds to the fabric of life in kotha.

Songs made up for a welcome relief in a movie's plot interspersed by betrayals, desires and disheartening moments. Songs very refreshing after a long time maybe for me old world charm Anu malik. The melodious rendition of Asha Bhonsale.

Dialogues were harsh and just face spitting literally taking on male feudal mentality of how woman gets treated. actually this movie would shame men who treat woman as just flesh.

but as a movie its plot is so insipid that we just have to find solace points for the money paid for ticket and that would be , Vidya's new avatar, beautiful cinematography and theme.

My expectations in end was riveting act of bravery by Begum Jaan's ferocious women but more a tame end. My other expectations were trying to draw parallel with Mirch Masala with Begum Jaan, which is too much to expect for the former type of movie excels in all compartments of movie making while for latter Srijit might not have taken inspiration from that but if he does kindly do your homework.

Recently stumbled on another woman centric do gooder movie Gulab Gang. Even though themes vary, the woman as a pivot revolving around other women, betrayals by a love mole and their subsequent revolt against local chieftain is all too similar. Except for the Gulab Gang's stronger screenplay and much better conceived story line goes to show how a good screenplay accompanied by less manufactured emotional themes which appeal to people.
